To answer how my behavior, both positively and negatively, impacts this community I first want to emphasize how the culture of a specific community, city, or nation comes to be. A community’s culture is the whole combination of its members’ actions, tastes, desires, feelings, and attitudes. Therefore, if the United States is known for the American dream or a country with opportunities, it means that most of its citizens, immigrants and locals, are hardworking individuals. If a University is known for its high rankings and valuable degrees, as it is the case for The University of Texas at Austin, means that its students are intelligent, hardworking, and most importantly, students who act with integrity. My behavior in this specific situation negatively affects this community by acting oppositely of what the culture of our University is known for. Therefore, if a student acts in a wrongful manner, others can see it as the common behavior in that specific University and affect both the reputation and culture of the school. However, in this world not one single thing is perfect, and from a bad situation, a good one can arise. Responsibility to me means to act in accordance to one’s moral obligations. Under this definition lie many actions, like being accountable for one’s mistakes and actions and learning from them, effectively complete my obligations, etc. In this situation I both failed and met my responsibilities. Failed, because I did not act in accordance to my moral obligations and I met my responsibilities by accepting my mistake, now doing everything to learn from it and act according to the consequences. I have learned a lot from this experience but I will emphasize two things. First, that acting with all of the five fundamental values of academic integrity is essential to never put my career, accountability, reputation, and relationships with professors at the University of Texas, at risk. Second, I learned that even if it was preferable not to experience this situation, I consistently learn from my mistakes and this essay and my future actions at the University of Texas will be proof of that. One very important thing will stay with me after this experience: that integrity is KEY in order to be a trustful, authentic, and good human being.
