Many politicians assumed that Marshall Mathers II or as many may know as Eminem was the reason many young adults were being influenced in a way that created them into a troubled group. Although these politicians may have a point, they weren’t too concerned with this issue until Eminem started gaining momentum in the African-American exclusive hip hop genre. Eminem’s sudden rise in popularity started attracting young white people to the genre and felt the power of his controversial explicit lyrics. This caught the attention of the Federal Communications Commission or the FCC, the regulators of interstate communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in all 50 states. In response to the attacks, Eminem released the explosive track titled “White America”. In the song, Eminem acknowledges that many young white youth started following him saying, “...they were instantly hooked right in and they connected with me too because I looked like them.” Then he goes on to acknowledge that the government is upset at his lyrics “Cause congress keep telling me, I ain’t nothing but problems and now they’re sayin’ I’m in trouble with the government, I’m lovin’ it…” Oppressing the artist is not only immoral but un-American, anyone has the right to say or do what they feel and the government should not hold the person expressing themselves accountable for a group of troubled youths, maybe they should look at the youth’s parents and their home environment. The most upsetting part about this is that the government didn’t start doing anything about hip hop until Eminem came into the picture with his new following of young white adults, blaming the rapper for the turbulence within the “youth”. Eminem raps, “Hip hop was never a problem in Harlem only in Boston after it bothered the fathers of the daughters starting to blossom” magnifying my point that no one cared about hip hop until the parents of this troubled youth started to realize what their kids were listening to. If the government really cared about the youth in general they would have done something a long time ago to help those who are not white. Maybe there is something more that freedom of speech involved such as, white privilege and racism, but again it does not give the government the right to take away someone’s right to freedom of speech regardless of the
