The quote “Racially segregated proms have been held in Montgomery County- where about two-thirds of the population is white- almost every year since its schools were integrated in 1971.” openly states how segregation is still happening, even in mid 2009. For 46 years this school has been having segregated prom and still continues to, even unto this day. A predominantly white county still demands to have a segregated prom. Obviously this country has not discriminated less and has not learned from history. Another excerpt “Most of the students do want to have a prom together, says Terra Fountain, a white 18-year-old who graduated from Montgomery County High School last year and is now living with her black boyfriend. But it’s the white parents who say no. … They’re like, if you’re going with the black people, I’m not going to pay for it.” is very blatant about racism. Mainly the adults of children in school refuse to help pay for a desegregated prom. That’s the way they did it and they refuse to have their children do it in any other way, even though it’s morally correct. This is a huge racism problem because school desegregation laws have been passed many years ago. Its 2017 and this area almost half the size of Rhode Island is highly segregated, and this is just what we know …show more content…
The quote “Two women fearful of being prosecuted for their secual activity aboard the train, agreed to testify that nine black youths had raped them.” shows how the whites take advantage of blacks solely on skin color. The women on the train didn’t want their names to be soiled so they ruined 9 black boys lives for their own gain. They had no consideration for the boys aged from 12 to 18 and how the boy's lives would be forever different. My second quote “The all-white jury convicted the nine and all but the youngest, who was 12 years old, were sentenced to death.” shows how ruthless the jury was. The all white jury sentenced 8 boys to death when death was not the punishment for adult rape. Usually a jury is made up of mixed races, religions, and age but this jury was made up of white males. The racial bias is very strong which caused the 9 innocent boys to be jailed. The quote “James Horton, set aside the verdict on the grounds that he did not believe the defendant committed the crime. The quote “That decision caused him to be defeated in the next election.” shows how one decision can make or break you. James Horton didn’t get elected because of his choice to show compassion and remorse for a black boy. The judge didn’t see Haywood Patterson as guilty yet he still was convicted. For just trying to get justice for an african american, a man’s career was ruined. This racism is found in the 1930’s and still continues
