A Farewell To Arms Essay
Farewell to Arms is a very interesting novel. There are multiple themes used throughout each chapter of the book. Even though some themes are recurring than others, the themes all play a role in the story. The most mentioned themes are about women, love, men. Along with these themes, symbolism between the rain and war are an important addition to the story. There are not many women in Farewell to Arms, but the women who are, follow a stereotype. The women in this novel are all either prostitutes or nurses that help in the war. Catherine likes him so much that all of the love that she gives him, she believes that it should not be taken by anyone else. Because of this, she gets very jealous because she feels that someone is trying to intervene on all of the love that she gave him. Another example is when Frederick says how he leaned forward in the dark to kiss her, and there was a sharp stinging flash and the Catherine apologized to him. At this moment Catherine acts with violence because she does not like what she has done and she does not want Frederick to kiss her because of that. This shows Catherine’s insecurity towards herself and how she is embarrassed about these flaws. In Farewell to Arms, love is a very dangerous topic. War is a major piece that is played out in this novel. Throughout the whole story constant warfare is occurring. The setting of the story is in Italy during World War One, before Frederick meets Catherine he is focused on winning the war with his calvary. World War One was one of the most dangerous and scary wars that ever occured, for Lieutenant Frederick to be fighting such a dangerous war as well as falling in love with one of the nurses everything was at risk. Men were dying and becoming wounded every single minute, stretcher bearers came in all the time, put their stretchers down, unloaded them and went away. This signifies that all around Frederick, or anyone in the army that was fighting, all they saw was men dying. The death toll during this war was tremendous, so many people had to be careful where they were at so that they wouldn’t die even when they weren’t on the
