The Auschwitz- Birkenau State Museum is now a memorial site which was formally established by the Polish Parliament on the 2nd July 1947. This was followed by the Auschwitz Birkenau Foundation, formally established in 2009. The foundation aims to preserve the memories and stories of the camps and to help fund their work, over 100 million euros have been donated in total. Some of the largest donations made to the Auschwitz Birkenau Foundation came from Germany, the USA, Poland, France, Austira, the UK, Switzerland, Israel, Italy and finally Russia.

Majdanek Concentration Camp was another huge death camp built by the Nazis in the Second World War, again in order to exterminate innocent Jews. There is also a memorial for this camp and the State Museum at Majdanek was founded in November 1944. The museum aims also to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust through organising exhibitions and also running educational and academic activities. The museum defines its mission as keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust and also promoting historical education of the German occupation during the Third Reich in the Second World War.
