These spirits are named the Ghost of Christmas Past and the Ghost of Christmas Present. We begin to see a glimpse of change in Scrooge when the Ghost of Christmas Past brings Scrooge to the hometown in which he was bred. As soon as he recognizes it he blurts out, “Good heaven! I was bred in this place. I was a boy here.” Scrooge’s face glistens and his lips begin to tremble as a tear spirals down his face. When Past acts him what is upon his cheek, he tries to play it cool and say that it is a blemish on his skin from over eating grease. He proceeds to ask the kind spirit to lead him where he will, quickly. Scrooge then encounters the Ghost of Christmas Present. He takes him to the home of his employee, Cratchit, to show him the awful life he lives. When Scrooge first enters the home, he is unaware of the fact that Cratchit has children and even questions if they are his. When Scrooge is asked about his foolish acts, we see change while he answers in disgust,... “fifteen shillings a weeks what he gets!” As you can see, Scrooge is disgusted by his actions and the feeling of remorse runs down his spine. One more example of us seeing a change in Scrooge, is when he sees Tiny Tim his heart begins to hurt and he asks the spirit to please tell him that Tiny Tim will live. Through the play, A Christmas Carol, we learn that just because of Scrooge’s actions, many helpless, hopeless lives have been changed for the better. As stated by Mahatma Gandhi, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world,” we know that all that is needed to change a life is just some kindness. Fortunately, with the help of a few wise spirits, Scrooge has changed his bad reputation and flipped it into something great. Unfortunately, we all fall into Scrooge’s shoes at some time. However, all we need to know is that if we need a change, we are the
