B. Graham. The tomato or the corn growing club was the first club of 4-H which later became known as the 4-H clubs by 1912. Soon others followed Graham by starting clubs. The 4-H colors are green which represent springtime, life, youth, and growth and white which represents purity and high ideals (Outreach). In 1910, Jessie Field Shambaugh established the clover pin with an H on each leaf. The emblem is a four leaf green clover with four white H’s. The club mainly focuses on spreading positivity, growing in partnerships, experiencing new learning opportunities, and helping youth grow in the right direction. The pledge used by all 4-Hers is, “My Head to clearer thinking, My Heart to greater loyalty, My Hands for larger service, and My Health to better living, for My Club, my Community, and my Country” (Britannica). PETA believes that 4-Hers are not giving the proper care to the animals in the projects. It also concludes that 4-H is teaching children to turn away from an animal that they have become close with during the project. 4-H is accused of showing children the wrong intentions with their animal projects. PETA believes that because 4-Hers show animals at state and county fairs, 4-Hers are making the animals suffer. They also feel that 4-H does not take the proper care of animals when the animals are sick, injured, and overly worked (PETA). PETA’s mission is to protect the rights of animals ( People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). 4-H’s mission is to instill a positive influence on every child in the world and to encourage children to step outside their comfort zone and tackle new challenges daily. When one participates in 4-H showmanship, a 4-Her learns to discipline the animal respectful. 4-H does not abuse animals in any way, shape, or form. If an individual does not get anything else out of 4-H, one learns to always be kind to others and treat animals with respect. Even though 4-Hers sell their animals to buyers, it does not mean that the buyers will immediately take them to meat processing plants and take away their life.
