Disco was born on Valentine's Day 1970, when David Manusco opened The Loft in New York City, and it rapidly faded in 1980. The era, which began in the mid-'70s, encouraged a whole generation to dance and party — often to excess. Disco is a genre of dance-oriented music popular from the mid-1970s through the early '80s.
